the struggle to maintain sanity
I told them, 'You're going to be uncomfortable. You're going to wonder why you have to take out the trash or pick things up off the floor.' Players begin to think, 'Wait, I'm a big-time athlete. I thought I was entitled to be treated like a king.' I asked them for a little bit of trust because I really believe discipline is how you win.
It's about time someone comes up and says this ... and I sincerely hope that Todd Graham drills this into the team. I'm sure I sound like an old man when I say this, but I'm sick of these players and their antics. Respect the school, respect the coach, respect the game, respect the opportunity you have. Ugh, I am an old man. GO SUN DEVILS!
I completely agree that the debate needs to be re-framed, but I think comparing to smoking won't do the trick. Nor will anything that makes people take personal responsibility for their actions. The problem is one where people put their individual needs and wants ahead of their fellow humans. Legislating this won't help either.
I see one of two ways around this. The vehicles we drive need collision avoidance - think radar with auto-braking, or networked so the cars talk to each-other and won't crash into each-other. The liklihood of this is probably pretty good. The second option is to stop driving and start using public transit ... let someone else drive ... and you're free to text, surf, sleep, read, whatever. The chances of this working for a big city, well we are already there. The chances of it working for the suburbs? Nil.
We need a technological solution to our recklessness.
